He camped his family on the spot where Heard House now stands, where after ward he built a fort of defense against the Indians. Nor more interesting house than is to be seen in the quaint, aristocratic, flowery little tbwii of Washington, in Wilkes County, Ga.It is known far and wide as Heard House, taking its name from Stephen Heard, the first settler of Wash ington, later a governor of Georgia, who reached there after a long journey from Virginia on New Years Day, 1774.
